October 27th & October 28th

October 27th JK Writing

The Experience

The Experience:

  • The experience will take place in the gathering area. I will have the JKs to work on this experience and my teacher will be working with the SKs at the U-Shape table on a different activity.

  • The Materials: I will hand out a marker and a small white board to each child and then show them the different lines we will be drawing together.

  • I show them each one individually, so they can practice each line on their own. Afterwards, I will write all the lines on the board so the children can write each one on the board including their name. This way my teacher and I can look at them together to get an idea where the children are at with their writing.

    Reflection

  • I enjoyed this activity with the children. I thought it was really beneficial to work in small groups, especially splitting the JKs and SKs. There is a difference between the two age groups and what they have learned in the previous year. Therefore, I find it really beneficial to take the JKs aside and work with them on the basic foundations that they need to learn and master. Especially focusing on writing and the letters.

  • I also found the small group was beneficial because I could sit in with them and watch where children needed guiding or direction, or correction. Correction to help the children fix the error after they have tried on their own.

  • Modification: For some children, they found it really difficult to write their name without an outline and so I would draw dotted lines so that they knew where to draw their name.

  • For next time, I am going to try to write all the lines at the same time instead of doing them individually, to enhance the experience for the children.

October 28th Monster Puppets

Purpose:

  • The children have taken the interest and time to create a haunted house in the dramatic area over the course of the week.

  • Yesterday, I was helping the children with planning and creating different aspects of the house. I noticed that they were interested specifically in the puppets and the puppet show stage and I thought they would be interested in creating different types of monsters and Halloween characters to add to that area of their haunted house as well.

  • My teacher and I decided that we will paint the bags earlier in the week and then today, the children would decorate the bags into different monsters.

  • Discussion: My teacher and I thought that it would be beneficial to use shapes as the materials to introduce and enhance the children’s experience with shapes. They will be using and focusing on shapes and using these different shapes to create faces, bodies, clothes, etc.

  • I will also have children reference the word wall/chart that we made with Halloween words, so that they practice their writing and literacy as well.

The Experience

The Experience:

  • This experience will take place at the U-shaped table during play and inquiry

  • Children will have the opportunity to come and use the shapes provided to them to decorate their paper bags that they painted earlier in the week

  • As children are working, I will ask them questions about their monsters, asking them to imagine what they would say, or a story about their monster.

  • I will also emphasize the shape names, asking children “which shape is this?” or “can you show me a square?”

  • I will also show the children an example of a body part that I made with the shapes, so that they understand that you can make a bigger picture with smaller shapes

  • Materials: paper bags, paint (2-3 different colours), sponge shapes stickers, sharpie markers (to add any drawings or designs), paper (different colours), scissors, glue
