October 31st & November 3rd

October 31st-Pumpkin Investigation

The experience:

  • We will split the children into 2 groups and have two different pumpkins to work with

  • There will be two tables set up with the following materials: 1 pumpkin, garbage bags set on top if the table, plate (for the seeds), carving tools, a worksheet for each child, pencils, erasers, measuring cubes, dry and eraser board/marker (for the teacher)

  • The student teacher and I will be in charge each of a table and our supervising teacher will be in the gathering area, waiting for the children to take the pumpkin seeds over to her for her to count with the children and find out how many seeds were in the pumpkin, while we finish the carving process.

  • We started the investigation and continued in this order:

  1. We used the measuring cubes to measure how tall the pumpkin was

  2. We then counted how many ribs were around the pumpkins shell

  3. We then predicted if the pumpkin would sink or float and went to test the theory at the water table

  4. We picked our shapes for the faces and drew them on the pumpkin

  5. I cut the top circle off the top and the children took turns taking out the seeds and put them on the plate.

  6. Once the pumpkin was cleaned out, some children of the group went and began to count the seeds with my teacher, and the other half stayed with me and helped me carve out the face of our pumpkin.

  7. After we finished the carving, we then joined the rest of the students and obtained our total for how many seeds were in the pumpkin. We recorded all of our results and cleaned up our areas

November 3rd-iPad Writing

Purpose:

  • During my block week earlier this semester, my teacher and I created a book on the iPad, where we would take a picture of the children, and have them write their name with their finger, as well as type their names underneath their pictures.

  • My teacher wants to have one done each month so that we can compare the writing of the names and see how the children are improving

  • Therefore, my teacher asked me today if I could be in charge of creating the book for November so that we could have them on file and compare to the last month’s book

  • Somethings my teacher asked to focus on:

  1. To make sure that the children are starting their letters from the top

  2. Make sure that the children write their name to the best of their ability independently, without hand on hand support

    The Experience:

  3. This experience will take place during play and inquiry at one of the tables in the classroom

  4. I will explain the activity before the children go out to play and inquiry and explain that I will be interrupting their play for 5 minutes for them to complete their part of the book and then they can continue playing

  5. I will work with one child at a time on the iPad (the only material required)

  6. I will start by taking a picture of the child, then I will direct them verbally to choose a colour to write their name with

  7. I will have the box of name cards at the table so the child can find their name and reference it if necessary

  8. Then they will write their name using their finger

  9. They will proceed to touch the text button that has the key board

  10. I will put the Caps lock on for the JKs so that they are writing in capital letters

  11. In the end, the children will have their picture, and the two different ways to write their name
