Why supply teaching is important!

One thing I have noticed this week is why it is important for graduates coming out of teacher's college to go out and supply teach before having their own class! It is one thing to be in placement in someone else's classroom but it is totally different to have the class completely under your control and learning those techniques and valuable teaching skills. In placement, you are getting a feel for your surroundings and techniques but those really sink in when you are applying them.

I think the fact that graduates need to go out and supply first before having their own class is beneficial to these professionals! You are around other people's teaching styles, colleagues, classroom set ups and activities that you are implementing with the children. You are also implementing and trying all types of behaviour management when you are in charge of a class of 20, almost 30 kids that are not used to having to listen to you! Getting the experience in different areas without supervision like you would in placement, I think gets you prepared for your own classroom! You are practicing time management skills, reporting, and having the kids under your watch.

Us graduates should look at supplying as a positive learning experience vs. a barrier to our own class!
